In 1981, at the Medinfo conference in Tokyo, Japan, Scholes and Barber were the first to publish the term, nursing informatics (Murray, 2010).

Georgetown University offered a course called, Computer Technology in Nursing (Saba, 2011).

Nurse informatics specialists became more prevalent (Staggers & Thompson, 2002).

Most hospitals had a basic information system to input patient information (Kaminski, 2014).
