  • Healthcare institutions began using second generation computers and patient care applications (Murphy, 2010; Saba, Johnson, & Simpson, 1994 as cited in Sewell & Thede, 2012).

 

  • Douglas Engelbart invented the mouse (Sewell & Thede, 2012).

 

  • Contributions of a nurse led to the development of an obstetrical computer-assisted instruction nursing simulation exercise (Saba, 2011).

 

  • A third generation of smaller sized computers was developed to include the internal circuit that allowed the use of multiple programs via a centralized program (Sewell & Thede, 2012).
